Structure of The ASM

The ASM has 26 Special Interest Groups (SIGs) which cover the major subdisciplines of microbiology such as the anti microbial, mycology, virology and probiotic subdisciplines of microbiology. Members within the different SIGs organise meetings according to their needs, and help plan symposia and workshops for the Annual Scientific Meetings.

Categories of membership of the Society are Fellow, Member, Associate, Student, Honorary and Retired.

Fellows of the Society are those microbiologists who, through a process of peer assessment, are determined to be either specialists in their field, or scientists who have made a significant contribution to the profession.

Members of the Society are scientists whose professional experience and formal qualifications are judged by the ASM's National Qualifications Committee to be consistent with a professional level of commitment to their career in microbiology.

Associates of the Society are those persons with an interest in the science of microbiology.
Honorary membership is conferred upon those people who have made an outstanding contribution to the Society or to the science of microbiology.

Student membership is available to any full time student in any discipline.
